About Chalkwell

Chalkwell ward is a coastal community of 10,000 inhabitants within the unitary authority of Southend-on-Sea, Essex. It is served by its own railway station on the Shoeburyness-London Fenchurch Street line. The ward is bounded to the south by the Thames Estuary, and its northern boundary takes in the south side of the A13 (London Road). To the east, its boundary is the west side of Valkyrie Road, Westcliff-on-Sea and its western limit is the east side of Woodfield Road, Leigh-on-Sea. See Map Below

Chalkwell takes its name from Chalkwell Hall, an old farmhouse that still stands, in what is now Chalkwell Park. The area, which was originally farmland, was developed for housing in the early part of the twentieth century, following the sale of the Chalkwell Hall estate. Chalkwell Hall itself has been rebuilt more than once, and the current building dates back to around 1830. Another well-known Chalkwell landmark is the Crow Stone or Crowstone. Standing on the foreshore at the bottom of Crowstone Avenue, this large stone was erected in 1837, replacing a smaller stone dating back to 1755, and served the purpose of marking the Essex limit of the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority.
